Eve Trilogy- Anna Carey
Anna Carey is from Long Island where she grew up with her parents. She talked of being a painter, a district attorney, a flutist, a physical therapist or a graphic designer. After a while she decided on writing. She studied literature and creative writing at New York University (NYU). When she finished college she started as an editor for children's publishing. She got her masters degree in fiction from Brooklyn College and now lives in Los Angeles.
Characters
The main character is Eve, a young girl who lives in the new North America. Eve lives in one of the schools for girls that the government set up after the plague killed many of their parents. Eve is best friends with Pip, another orphan at school. Eve also goes to school with Arden, who will become very close to Eve later. On Eve's travels she meets Caleb, the first boy she ever met. Caleb used to work in the work camps for boys. Eve had never met a boy before because the schools teach the girls that boys are dangerous. Eve also has a close relationship with her teachers who help her escape. They meet many people along the trail of rebels living outside of the city.
Synopsis
Eve is a smart, successful student at one of the best schools in the New America. After the plague, that is where the girls ended up. Eve is the school's valedictorian and has heard she is going to receive a special visit from the governor of the City of Sand. The schools have always taught the girls that men are dangerous, the New America is being built thanks to the efforts of the girls, and that when the girls graduate they will go on to have wonderful jobs in the City of Sand. Eve learns the truth. With the help of one of the school's teachers, she learns that after graduation the girls go to the building across the lake to have children and that the governor wants to take Eve back to the City to, presumably, become his wife. Eve escapes in hopes to make it to Califia, a home for rogue women. Eve, having never been over the school's fence, sets off. She meets a boy named Caleb along the way, but being taught to fear boys she does not trust him. Soon she realizes that the City of Sand was not the only thing the teachers were wrong about and falls in love with Caleb. On their way to Caleb's camp, they run into Arden who is injured. They get to they camp and stay for a while. Soon though the boys learn that Eve is wanted by the City. The boys want to turn her in, but Caleb gets her out and on her way to Califia. Once at Califia Caleb is not allowed in because it is for girls only. Eve is torn; she wants to be with Caleb, not realizing they will meet again soon. Caleb leaves and the book ends with Eve fitting into Califia. In the next three books it outlines the growing romance of Eve and Caleb and their alliance against the City spreading.
Books To Look For
The next book in this trilogy is 'Once' followed by 'Rise'. 'Rise' will be released in April 2013. Along with many of the books I have reviewed on this website, this series is of a dystopian future. Books that are the same style include: Hunger Games; Divergent; Matched and The Bar Code Tattoo by Suzane Weyns. This genre is becoming very popular as this topic is on many people's minds. Talk of the Apocalypse and 2013 brought about these styles of writing and put them into the top 10 book lists. This style is very interesting giving any romance that occurs filled with adventure and fear of survival. I quite enjoy this style and I am looking forward to Rise coming out as well as finishing many other series listed above.
